Share of Italians that claim they always ask for an invoice or bill after a transaction, even if it means paying more (click to enlarge)
Daily tax evasion, that blamed generally on retailers, plumbers or hotel managers, is one of the great issues of our fiscal hell. The Monti government has been airing a sensibilization campaign lately, depicting tax evaders as hideous, ugly parasites – on the grounds that Italians are generally lenient on this issue as it means saving for them. In this as in many other issues, the government seems to act on stereotypes rather than on robust knowledge about how Italians behave. These numbers say that, once more, they’d need just little incentive to wipe out the plague entirely. As usual, maybe it’s me being overly optimistic.
