So Italians were in love with the neo-liberist myth of a small government and a privatized welfare. Berlusconi (which just claimed he was going in that direction) and the Crisis have made Italians change their mind in droves. Mind that this was well in advance of the 2011 switch over to the technocratic government. Today, an effective democracy would pull things too far to the left, so it is a good time for emergency measures, so that we can end up paying more taxes to have a smaller government. The subtle art of compromise, I guess.
